Two Burrs? You Mean Potatoes? NO! It’s The New Momentum Hand Grinder

by admin

You know those burr grinders that are, like, two burr grinders, you know? Yesterday we brought news of AeroPress making their first manual grinder, one that fits smartly inside the plunger of the AeroPress brewer. And today there’s another new hand grinder hitting the market, and this one puts a heavy focus on flavor. The Momentum hand grinder by I’m Not A Barista is a dual burr grinder meant to give users more exacting control over the flavor output of their coffee, and it’s live on Kickstarter now.

This is the third iteration of the Momentum hand grinder that saw an initial successful crowdfunding campaign back in 2022. The conceit is essentially that grinding is best done in two stages, one for pre-breaking the coffee into smaller pieces followed by a finer grind.

In the Momentum, the coffee initially passed through a 28mm conical burr, which the campaign says sets the flavor profile. Using a sound system analogy, I’m Not A Barista describes it as setting the volume. This is the pre-breaking phase. Then those grounds go a larger, 36mm conical burr for the finer grinding, which would be the equalizer setting the tone to continue the analogy.

Both burr sets are externally adjustable to further fine tune the grind.

Beyond burrs, the Momentum includes a host of other thoughtful features to enhance the usability and experience. The catch cup that the grinds fall into doubles (or quadruples) as a blind shaker, a sifter, and a magnetic knocker to remove all the grounds from the grinder. The length of the crank arm can be adjusted between 13cm and 16cm long to allow for better leverage and easier grinding. And the push-button locking crank knob comes in a variety of ergonomic shapes. Batch #3 improves upon the overall capacity of prior versions, maxing out at 30g.

With a little over three weeks left in the campaign, the Momentum has well surpassed its $1,990 goal. Interested backers can still get a Momentum for $499, $50 off the MSRP. Rewards are expected to start shipping out in February of 2026.
