On August 1st, a wildfire was ignited just west of Spokane, Washington, engulfing over 3,500 acres in its first day. Then on Monday, two additional wildfires broke out, and collectively all three have destroyed over 7,000 acres of land and at least 700 structures. The second largest city in Washington, 67,000 residents have been evacuated due to the wildfires, over a quarter of the city’s population.
Firefighters have been working since the onset but currently, the wildfire is not contained and continues to spread. And as is so often the case in times of crisis, local coffee shops are stepping up.
For as long as there have been cafes, they have been third places, a place to congregate outside of the home and work. And when disaster strikes, it is this aspect of the coffee shop that takes an even larger role. South of the fires, First Avenue Coffee is offering a place to anyone who needs a place to go. Anything from charging a phone to utilizing the free wifi to just taking a moment to sit and breathe, First Avenue has opened its doors to all affected.
Elsewhere, Roast House Coffee is serving their community in a more literal sense. Along with free drinks to all first responders working to contain the fires, they are offering a free meal and coffee to anyone impacted. Folks can DM the via Instagram to RSVP or can stop by for free instant coffee.
Likewise, Mi Flavour is offering a free coffee and macaron to all first responders.
The situation in Spokane is still very much developing. Like the residents themselves, the coffee shops have been impacted by the wildfires. Even still, they remain open and looking to help anyone in need.
