Coffee is art. It’s a fact the specialty coffee has spent the past two-plus decades trying to convince the world of. It is also true that art is coffee, or at least it is in the case of this admittedly wild pour-over. It is inspired by the works of French sculptor Auguste Rodin, and you can buy it on eBay right this very moment.
Best known for The Thinker, Rodin is widely considered to be the father of modern sculpture whose work often focuses on the human form. This pour-over certainly I sin keeping with that tradition, though it is more The Walking Man than The Thinker.
Hand made by London-based artist Jascha Lenkiewicz, the porcelain coffee maker features the armless torso of a man with a conical pour-over for a head and very Stranger Things-like legs. And the brewed coffee? It dribbles out of his ahem. (We around the Sprudge offices have taken to calling it the “Pee60”.) The flow rate could certainly use a little work; it has what Cotton Hill would refer to as a “narrow ureetee.” It’s got a certain Zoolander vibe to it.
Which is to say, I deeply want this weird little pour-over device. And in fact, the only reason I’m writing about it, and thus increasing the chances of being outbid for it, is that because it’s a little outside income bracket. As of reporting, the current bid on the Rodin pour-over on eBay sits at over £400 ($467 USD), and the reserve is not yet met. Which is a shame because it would go great with my butt mug.
Lenkiewicz states that he plans to make more of this functional sculpture, though given how time-intensive the process is, it will be months before they are completed. So as of now, this is the only Rodin-inspired coffee tinkler in existence, that we are aware of at least.
But if I can’t have it, I’d love for someone in the weird world of specialty coffee to. So please, someone buy this thing and let us know how pee coffee is.
