Consider the tiramisu. It is the world’s greatest coffee-based dessert, begging pardon of the affogato. Part of its greatness is how easy it is to make. Give some savoiardi (aka ladyfingers) a dunk in espresso, layer with mascarpone, and dust with cocoa powder. Then there’s the taste. It’s coffee forward, and light but decadent. It’s the sort of dessert you feel like you could eat forever without getting full. But one’s constitution to that end would be put to the test by the recently dubbed World’s Longest Tiramisu, that sits at over a quarter-mile long.
As reported by the BBC, the record-breaking dessert was created in April at London’s Chelsea Town Hall by a team led by Mirko Ricci, who previously held the record for World Longest Tiramisu until 2019 when an Italian team bested him.
Partnering with IllyCaffé, Forno Bonomi savoiardi, Carnevale, Gelecta, Bontá Italia, Complitaly TV, Sterligarda, and Eurovo, Ricci’s team of 100 Italian chefs constructed a tiramisu at a staggering 440.6 meters long, or 1,445 feet. Assembled on site, which had to be 8cm (3.15”) high and 15cm (5.9”) wide in order to break the record, the dessert consisted of 150,000 savoiardi and 20,000 eggs.
Officially recognized by the Guinness Book at the World’s Longest, the tiramisu was created in the UK and not Italy, per Ricci, “in honor of the King and the Royal Family” and was finished with a gold crown on top.
Funds raised by the record-breaking dessert will go to the Esharelife Foundation, a charity focusing on aiding those in poverty, promoting education, and improving healthcare in disadvantaged areas.
While the World’s Longest Tiramisu, it is unclear if it is also the World’s Largest. The current record holder sits at 3,015kg (6,646lb) and consists of 450kg savoiardi, 750kg coffee, and 1,250kg mascarpone and cream. A little napkin math has this latest tiramisu at 1,125kg savoiardi, 99kg coffee, and 1,843kg mascarpone. Thus it is likely also the World’s Largest Tiramisu, even if not officially recognized by Guinness as such. So put on a pot of the World’s Largest Coffee and invite all your friends and all your friend’s friends and all their friends too, because it’s time for dessert.
